Choose a marketing agency by the problem you need solved, not by the list of services on its website.
Then ask a few plain questions before you sign anything.
I run an SEO agency, not a general marketing agency, so I’ll tell you where SEO fits and where you need someone else.
In short: Choose a Nairobi marketing agency by the problem you need solved: SEO for search enquiries, branding for recognition, paid ads for quick traffic. Then ask plain questions before you sign.
Key takeaways
- Social media posting is one part of marketing, not all of it.
- A weak brand can't be fixed by any marketing, so fix that first.
- With SEO you may see early movement, but proper results start around month 3.
- Ask what is done each month, who checks it, and how and when you can leave.
- AM Digital KE sells one SEO plan, Managed SEO, from KES 80,000 a month.
What a marketing agency in Nairobi actually does
An agency does marketing work for you so more of the right people find you and buy.
SEO helps people find your website through search; social media covers posts and conversations on social platforms; paid ads pay for visits.
Content means articles or videos, email reaches customers through their inboxes, branding shapes your name and message, and web design shapes your website.
Many owners think marketing means posting on social media. That is one part of it. If you don’t know which part you need, you can’t tell what you are buying.

The kinds of marketing agencies in Kenya, side by side
Most agencies list the same services, so they look identical from outside. The difference is what each one does best. Find your row.
| Kind | What it does | Who it suits | What to check |
| SEO agency | Gets your site found on Google | Owners who want steady enquiries from search | What is done each month, and who approves it |
| Social media agency | Runs your social accounts and posts | Businesses whose customers spend time on social platforms | What the posts are meant to achieve |
| Branding or design studio | Builds your name, look and message | New businesses, or ones people don’t recognise | Whether they show how the brand is used in practice |
| Paid ads agency | Buys traffic through adverts | Owners who want quick visits | Who owns the ad account, and what happens when ads stop |
| Full-service agency | Offers several services in one place | Owners who want one contact for many needs | Whether each service is done well, or only listed |
| Freelancer | Does one skill for you directly | Small, clear jobs | Who covers the work if they are unavailable |

How to choose a marketing agency for your business
Match the kind to the problem. Need steady enquiries from search? Pick an SEO agency. Need a brand people recognise?
Pick a branding studio. Need quick paid traffic? Pick a paid ads agency.
Check your brand first. A weak brand can’t be fixed by any marketing, and no amount of SEO fixes a broken brand. If that is your problem, start with branding help.
Set honest timing. With SEO you may see movement early, but proper results start around month 3. Be careful with anyone who promises results in a month.
Full-service agency or specialist?
Choose a specialist when you know your one problem. Choose a full-service agency when you need several things and want one contact. Ask the full-service agency to show real work in each service you’ll use.
Agency or freelancer?
A freelancer suits a small, clear job. An agency suits ongoing work that needs a team. Read our comparison of an SEO agency and a freelancer in Kenya.
What does it cost?
I can’t give you prices for other agencies, and a figure from me would be a guess. Ask each one what the monthly fee covers, in writing. Our piece on cheap SEO agencies in Kenya shows what a low fee can leave out.
Questions to ask before you sign
- What exactly is done each month? A good answer lists tasks and numbers. A vague one says “we’ll optimise your presence”.
- Who writes and checks the work? A good answer names a person who reads it before you do.
- Do I approve before anything goes live? The answer should be yes.
- How do you report? Look for a plain report and a call, not a screen of charts.
- Is there a lock-in contract? Ask how and when you can leave.
- How do you use AI? AI for drafts is fine if a person edits and checks the facts. Be wary of AI text published untouched.
This is how you know the work is real: you can see what was done, who did it and what changed. Our page on questions to ask before hiring an SEO agency goes deeper.

Where SEO fits, and where I fit
SEO can be worth it when customers search for what you sell. It can bring sales and leads, because people who search are often ready to act.
Many Kenyan businesses skip it because they think marketing is posting on social media, so SEO stays unfamiliar.
If your customers don’t search, or your brand is weak, pick another kind of help first.
AM Digital KE is an SEO agency. I tested 15 Kenyan SEO agencies and spoke to their past clients, and I’ve published comparisons such as Savage Digital vs AM Digital KE and KenSEO vs AM Digital KE.
We sell one plan, Managed SEO, from KES 80,000 a month. No package menus, no lock-in. Nothing goes live until you approve it. It includes:
- A strategy built for your business, carried out with you
- Up to 30 articles a month, each read and edited by a person
- 4 of your existing pages improved every month
- Fixes to current pages: broken links, redirects that send visitors to another page, and missing page titles
- Links between your own pages, added every week
- Social posts made from your articles
- The SEO Brain: ask it anything, any day of the month
- A plain-language report and a monthly call with me
We don’t manage social media. If that is what you need, hire a social media agency.
Next, run your site through the free analysis. It’s instant, needs no call, and a call is optional afterwards.
