Your ads are working. People are seeing them. Some are even clicking!
But here’s what keeps me up at night as an SEO specialist running an agency:
While your ad gets ONE chance to catch someone scrolling at lunch, your competitor is capturing customers in THREE other moments you don’t even know exist.
Ads are linear. Show → See → Maybe Remember → Maybe Act. That’s one shot at a sale.
But customers don’t buy in straight lines. They buy in moments. Multiple moments. Unpredictable moments.
Right now, someone needs exactly what you sell. They’re searching for it on Google or asking ChatGPT about it. They’re ready to buy.
Your ad won’t reach them. Your competitor will.
Let me show you the three buying moments your ads physically cannot capture. And why each one is costing you more than your monthly ad spend.
Why Ads Only Cover 25% of the Journey
Ads are a PUSH strategy (outbound marketing). You decide when people see you. You interrupt their scroll at lunch and hope they’re interested RIGHT THEN. Or, you bank on them remembering later.
But here’s the reality of modern customer behaviour:
Nobody buys exactly when they see an ad. They see it, think it’s “interesting,” and keep scrolling. Later, when they’re READY to buy, they don’t come back to your ad.
They do this instead:
- Google: “[service] near me” or “best [product] Nairobi”
- Ask AI: “ChatGPT, what’s the best [service] in Nairobi?”
- Check Perplexity: For reviews and comparisons
- Cross-reference: Multiple sources before deciding
I call this the Pull strategy, inbound marketing!
Here’s what matters: Kenya is now one of Africa’s biggest AI users. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and so on. Millions of Kenyans use these tools daily.
And most of that usage? Personal research. Product decisions. Shopping.
AI tools don’t see your Facebook ads. They recommend based on web presence only.
Check out my complete analysis on how AI finds product/service recommendations here.
Here are the three exact moments where buying decisions happen. Moments your ads will never reach. But your competitor? They own all three.
Moment #1: The Emergency (When They Need It RIGHT NOW)
It’s 7:45 AM. You’re on Thika Road, heading to an important meeting in 30 minutes.
Your gearbox fails, and your car won’t move. Your reliable mechanic is on the other side of town, and there is no way they can get to you in time. All you can do is panic and think of immediate solutions.
What do you do?
Did you see a mechanic’s ad last month? Maybe. Do you remember it now, while stranded? Absolutely not. Do you scroll through your Instagram Saved Posts hoping to find that ad? Never.
Here’s what actually happens:
You pull out your phone and Google: “gearbox repair on Thika Road”
Or you open ChatGPT: “I need emergency car repair on Thika Road, who should I call?”
Three results show up on Google. AI recommends businesses with strong online presence. You call the first three. The first one available gets the Sh25,000 job.
Your competitor answered. You didn’t even appear. Your beautiful ad from last week? Completely irrelevant at this moment.
These emergency moments happen constantly in every industry:
- “24-hour hospital on Ngong Road” – 140 searches every month
- “Emergency car repair in Westlands” – 90 searches every month
- “Urgent towing service Mombasa Road” – 200+ searches every month
These are people with money in hand, ready to pay premium prices for immediate help. Your ads will never capture this moment. These buyers will never scroll back to find your ad.
Moment #2: The Craving (When They Want It NOW)
Someone’s driving through Nakuru and they suddenly crave slow-cooked mbuzi.
They saw your nyama choma spot ad on TikTok two weeks ago, where you created a beautiful video with the latest trending sound. Their mouth watered at the presentation. They even liked it. Maybe saved it.
But right now? They’re hungry and in their car, looking for billboards for slow nyama choma along the highway. They want food in 20 minutes.
Do they remember your business name? No. Do they scroll back through two weeks of saved posts? Never. Do they drive around looking for your location? Maybe, but will they get the best nyama choma in Nakuru?
Here’s what they do:
- Google: “best nyama choma Nakuru”
- Or ChatGPT: “What’s the best nyama choma place in Nakuru right now?”
- Or Perplexity: “Top-rated restaurants Nakuru reviews”
Google shows five restaurants with reviews, photos, locations, and hours. AI recommends places with strong web presence and reviews. Your competitor ranks #1 with 4.8 stars and 50+ reviews.
They call. Get directions. Done! Full bellies with plenty of data and time saved.
You created the craving and demand with your ad. While your competitor captured the sale with their SEO ranking.
These “want it now” moments drive massive daily revenue:
- “Best salon Westlands” – 320 searches per month
- “Top mechanic Nairobi” – 180 searches per month
- “Best coffee shop near me” – 500+ searches per month
Your ad planted the seed weeks ago, and your competitor harvests the sale today. You’ll never know they were YOUR customer first.
Moment #3: The Research Phase (When They’re Doing Their Due Diligence)
Samuel sees your car dealership ad for a Toyota Premio. Sh1.5 million. Clean photos and great prices. They haven’t seen a better-maintained car at that price before.
He’s genuinely interested. Your ad did its job perfectly.
But Samuel is about to make a massive financial decision. He’s not calling you yet. Not even close. First, he needs to research.
Your ad is just his starting point. Google and AI are his decision-makers.
Here’s what Samuel does:
His Google searches:
- “Toyota Premio price comparison Kenya”
- “Best car dealers Nairobi reviews”
- “Toyota Premio reliability problems”
- “Car dealer near me ratings”
His ChatGPT prompts:
- “Compare the top 5 car dealers in Nairobi”
- “What should I look for when buying a Premio?”
- “Red flags when buying from car dealers”
His process:
He makes a mental or physical spreadsheet, comparing six dealers. Your competitors dominate search results, have blogs, detailed reviews and video walkthroughs.
So, even if Samuel visits their site without purchasing, they still provide enough content for them to build trust.
AI keeps recommending them because of their strong web presence.
By the time Samuel is ready to buy, he doesn’t remember your ad. He remembers who Google and ChatGPT told him to trust.
And here’s the reality of high-ticket purchases:
- B2B buyers research for 47 days on average before purchase
- Car buyers visit 5-7 websites before contacting a dealer
- 88% of buyers research online before ever making contact
You funded their awareness campaign. They collected the revenue.
The Pattern That’s Killing Your ROI [Infographic]
Look at the cycle:

Moment 1 – Emergency: High urgency + Ready to pay premium + They Google or ask AI = Competitor wins
Moment 2 – Craving: Immediate need + Your ad created the want + They search for “best” = Competitor wins
Moment 3 – Research: Weeks of deciding + Multiple comparisons + They trust search results = Competitor wins
Here’s the math that should concern you:
You’re paying Sh100,000 per month to create awareness. Thousands see your ads. That’s working. A percentage gets interested. Your ads worked!
But when they’re READY to buy:
- Emergency moment? Google + AI → Competitor gets the call
- Craving moment? Google + AI → Competitor gets the booking
- Research phase? Google + AI → Competitor gets the sale
You’re running the most effective marketing campaign your competition never paid for.
Why This Keeps Happening
The fundamental mismatch is simple:
Ads = Interruptive marketing. You push content to them.
Search + AI = Intentional discovery. They pull when ready.
These two rarely align in timing.
Modern Kenyans don’t trust single sources. They cross-reference everything: Google, ChatGPT, reviews, friends. They verify before buying.
Your ad is just ONE touchpoint. But purchase decisions require 7-13 touchpoints. If you’re not present in search and AI recommendations, you lose.
Here’s the memory problem: People forget 90% of ads within 24 hours. But they remember 100% of what they actively searched for… because they NEEDED it.
The result? Your ads cover ONE moment (initial awareness). Three OTHER moments actually drive sales. You’re covering 25% of the journey. Your competitor owns the other 75%.
Before You Do Anything Else: Take This 3-Minute Test
The 2-Minute Reality Check
Pretend you’re your own customer:
- Pull out your phone right now
- Google what your customers would Google (like “plumber near me” or “best accountant Nairobi”)
- Look at who shows up
Be honest: Would you find your business?
If not, neither are your customers—no matter how much you’re spending on ads.
Take 1 Minute To Go One Step Deeper:
Open the first three businesses that show up (yes, your competitors).
Look at what they have that you don’t:
What to compare:
- Reviews: How many do they have? What’s their rating? Are customers talking about specific things?
- Photos: Do they show their work, their team, their office? Does it look professional?
- Information: Can you find their hours, location, phone number, and services immediately? Or do you have to hunt?
- Content: Do they have a website? Is there helpful information, or just “call us now”?
- Presence: Are they on Google Maps? Do they have a complete business profile?
The Gap You Just Saw? That’s Why They Win.
They’re not spending more on ads. They’re not even better than you.
They’re just visible and credible when the search happens.
